Gypsum was used to neutralize the toxic alkaline material spilled into the river Marcal, part of the Danube’s tributary system. Gypsum and acid was continually added to adjust the pH value to a more favourable level to reduce the impact on aquatic flora and fauna.
The Hungary’s toxic-sludge spill, killed four and injured more than 100 people, triggered environmental warnings on the Danube River.
