The Federal Government has released a calculator for landfill operators.
Only certain operators are required to report and pay carbon tax on thier emmissions.
Based on default figures released by the Federal government, one tonne of waste at landfill have been estimated to have a range of $2 – $35 per tonne. A lot depends on the landfill waste and whether the site has gas capture or not.
Rod Sims, the chair of the ACCC says there is no right answer in how to price carbon with landfill. Different people could come up with different answers. Different accounting firms could reasonably come up with different answers, so if you are happy with the first result you don’t need to pursue another assessment.
