Super Ag Lime is a recycled by-product lime also known as carbide lime, hydrated lime or slaked lime and is pound for pound up to 150% more effective at raising pH and is also quicker to react than ground limestone (calcium carbonate/ag lime). Similar to the recycled gypsum products the lime’s solubility and purity are comparable to the best limestone mines in Australia.
Burning” (calcination) converts the limestone into a highly caustic material called quicklime (calcium oxide, CaO) and, through subsequent addition of water (re-hydration), the product goes back into the less caustic (but still strongly alkaline) called slaked lime or hydrated lime (calcium hydroxide, Ca(OH)2), the process of which is called slaking of lime.
